IT’S been almost a year since the death of Senzo Meyiwa and life is tough for the footballer’s family.
“We need to perform ukubuyisa for Senzo but we don’t have the money,” said his father, Samuel Meyiwa.
“We need R10 000 for a cow and R650 for a goat. If we don’t do the ritual, my son will never rest in peace.”
Samuel seemed desperate when speaking to City Press.
“Sometimes we even go to bed with empty stomachs. My son was a breadwinner.
“Why did they kill him?” he asked.
Zakhona Ndlovu, a traditional healer in Durban, agreed that the ceremony had to be performed by the Meyiwas.
“The immediate family should be there when the ritual takes place.
“If they don’t attend there will be consequences,” she said.
Samuel would not speak about Kelly Khumalo bringing Senzo’s one-year-old daughter to the ceremony.
“Don’t tell me about Kelly. You are opening wounds,” he said.
Kelly did not respond to a request for comment.
Senzo died on 26 October last year when he was shot at Kelly’s mother’s home in Vosloorus, Ekurhuleni.
Samuel said he was still in talks with other family members to confirm the date of the ceremony.
He said Senzo’s widow, Mandisa Mkhize, will attend the ceremony with her daughter.
“She was Senzo’s wife and our makoti,” he said.
Samuel is trying to find out what is happening with his son’s R5 million life assurance policy.
“The payout has been delayed because some of the beneficiaries of the policy are suspects in the case,” he said.
