The iPhone 5S was made official at a special media event held at Apple’s headquarters in Cupertino, California on Tuesday, 10 September 2013, confirming many of the rumours that emerged ahead of the announcement.

As expected, the device will feature full LTE support, be available in white, black, and gold, and a fingerprint reader.

Called “Touch ID”, Apple said the fingerprint sensor was its solution to the problem that about half of smartphone customers don’t set up a passcode.

A chip with 64-bit architecture. A fingerprint identity sensor. A better, faster camera. And an operating system built specifically for 64 bit. Touch ID

And because Touch ID lets you enrol multiple fingerprints, it knows the people you trust too.

A7 chip

There’s fast. And then there’s A7 fast. The new A7 chip gives you CPU and graphics performance up to 2x faster than the A6 chip. Even more impressive, A7 makes iPhone 5s the first 64-bit smartphone in the world.

M7 coprocessor 

The new M7 coprocessor is like a sidekick to the A7 chip. It’s designed specifically to measure motion data from the accelerometer, gyroscope and compass. Now fitness apps that track physical activity can access that data from the M7 coprocessor without constantly engaging the A7 chip. M7 knows when you’re walking, running or even driving. For example, Maps switches from driving to walking turn-by-turn navigation if, say, you park and continue on foot.

Availability

While no pre-order date for the iPhone 5S was announced, Schiller said that it will be available on 20 September 2013 in the US, Australia, Canada, China, France, Germany, Japan, Singapore, and the UK.

By December 2013, Schiller said that the device will be available in 100 countries across 270 carriers.
Apple will continue to sell the 8GB iPhone 4S without pay-in on contract in the US.
