Nelson Mandela, the jailed ANC leader freed on 2.2.90 after 27 years in prison, gave his first press conference since his release today. He tried to express his feelings about being released, his hopes for the future of South Africa, and defended his the ANC armed struggle despite hoping for a lasting peace in S Africa. On the question of an invitation to visit Number Ten & PM Margaret Thatcher he said that he would be advised by the ANC on whether to accept or not.
