Wits University obtained an urgent interdict on to allow the police to step in if there are violent protests, if students and staff are intimidated or if classes are disrupted.
Wits university spokesperson, Shirona Patel said the interdict allows for policing of the following:
– disrupting lectures, tutorials;
– preventing any person from entering or leaving the university;
– causing damage to the property of the university, its staff or students;
– harassing, intimidating, threatening or assaulting any of the university’s staff, students and members of the public in any manner.

Patel said there had been incidents of vandalism and intimidation by those who did not want the academic programme to continue.
“This is just to allow police to be able to come in and intervene because police told us they cannot act against perpetrators without an interdict.”
She said the university respected the rights of people to free speech and legitimate forms of protest provided that it does not infringe on the rights of others who want to learn and work.
