A Facebook post from a group of youngsters claiming to be from Hilton College has apologised for a "mock rape" picture that went viral earlier this week.
The boys landed themselves in hot water on Thursday after a number of politicians and advocacy groups deplored the young men’s lack of sensitivity after it was posted to social media on Tuesday.
In a Facebook post on Friday, Sebastian Dawber garnered hundreds of shares and likes after the young men humbled themselves.
Part of the post read: "We would like to apologise for our actions on Tuesday October 13 2015. The manner in which your school has been portrayed due to our irresponsible and inconsiderate behaviour is something we are not proud of and would like to profusely apologise for. We have embarrassed our families and Hilton College due to our unfathomable actions.
"We are not making excuses and take full responsibility for our actions. We feel you have the right to know why it was done. It was intended as a joke between friends, but was a gross misjudgement. However it is fully understandable as to why people reacted with such disgust.
"St. Anne’s is a fantastic school with an unmatchable reputation…The topic of gender inequality is very sensitive in today’s society and although we did intend to make light of the topic, as Hilton boys we should know better and put more thought into what we upload on to social media. People understandably perceived our actions in the opposite way to which it was intended and we take full ownership for this."
In a statement earlier in the week, the prestigious private school in Hilton Road said they had initiated an investigation into the incident.
"One of our boys posted a highly offensive photograph on Instagram. We are appalled and cannot condemn this sufficiently strongly. It flies in the face of all the school stands for and teaches," it read.
"We are urgently investigating the matter and view it in a very serious light. We will take appropriate disciplinary action once the investigation is complete."
