HE taximen had gone to a funeral to bury a colleague, but on the journey home, there was more tragedy.
While the 11 taxi drivers were driving home from Harrismith in the Free State to Gauteng on Saturday, a fatal shooting took place.
They were standing at a stop and go on the R74 near Harrismith when one of the drivers got out to pee. As he was about to get back into the Toyota Quantum taxi, he was accused of the murder of the man they had just buried.
The accused man went berserk.
He pulled out a gun and started shooting wildly. He shot five people. One man died while four lay wounded.
Then the man turned the gun on himself and killed himself as well.
Police spokesman Sergeant Mmako Mophiring said: “We are investigating a case of murder, four counts of attempted murder and an inquest docket.
“Eleven people from the Katlehong People’s Taxi Association were travelling back from a funeral. They were at a stop and go when one of the passengers started accusing a friend of the buried man of murdering his friend,” said Mophiring.
“The accused allegedly went back to the taxi where the remaining five passengers were waiting and started shooting inside the taxi.
“Then he pointed the gun at his own head and shot himself. He died on the scene.”
He said the taxi owner and three other people were taken to Thebe District Hospital with gunshot wounds while one man aged about 40 died at the scene.
“The firearm is licensed and belongs to the man who did the shooting,” Mophiring said.
