A UK couple say the life of their unborn baby was saved by the mother taking Viagra during her pregnancy.
Laura and Dave Liggins’ daughter, Casey, was born 11 weeks prematurely, weighing just 590g.
When Laura had her 20-week scan doctors told her that her unborn daughter was not growing properly.
Tests found the blood flow through the umbilical cord was inconsistent, and was ebbing and flowing with Casey’s heartbeat.
The couple were referred to St Mary’s Placenta Clinic, whose staff urged Laura to go on a trial in which pregnant women take Viagra.
The trial tests whether giving pregnant women the drug three times a day will boost blood flow to babies to give them more time in the womb to grow.
Dave Liggins said: “Looking at Casey now, it’s hard to believe she almost wasn’t here. If it wasn’t for the incredible work of the team we would have lost her. Viagra saved my daughter’s life.”
