University of the Witwatersrand (Wits) students on Thursday again blockaded access points to the campus in a protest over an increase in fees.
The action saw the university having to suspend all “lectures and academic activities…for one day only…in the interests of protecting the safety and security of staff and students” on Wednesday.
The #WitsFeesMustFall hashtag trended on Twitter for a second day with some users accusing the police of heavy-handed action overnight.
Xolane Ngcobo @XolaneNgb tweeted a pic of police officers appearing to detain a student: “Police were Kicking ass lastnight… This is not right #WitsFeeMustFall”‚ and “Students assaulted at Wits #WitsFeeMustFall
Wits issued a statement on Wednesday saying the suspension followed “a sit-in by groups of students and student leaders who initially prevented staff and students from entering campus and who disrupted some academic activities this morning”.
“Aside from one altercation this morning and the vandalisation of some classes overnight‚ no violence has been reported‚” the statement said.
