GIRL (12) IN TROUBLE WITH GOGO’S MASHONISA

MANY people call mashonisas loan sharks for making sure they always get their money . . . and then some!

This is the lesson a family from Umlazi’s BB section, south of Durban learned after their 12-year-old granddaughter borrowed R100 cash from her gogo’s mashonisa – without telling them.

The mashonisa said he didn’t care who borrowed the money under gogo’s name – he had already added R50 because they didn’t pay back the 100 bucks on the agreed date.

The gogo, who cannot be identified to protect the child, said the girl told her she panicked when she realised that her friend’s birthday was the next day and that she had no money for a present.

She said her granddaughter went and lied to the mashonisa, saying they didn’t have bread.

Gogo said she was surprised when her mashonisa called on Sunday, demanding his money back.

“I laughed it off. He said that at the end of September I sent my granddaughter to ask for the money in my name.

“I thought he was mistaking me for someone else.

“He didn’t want to listen to me when I explained that I didn’t send her,” said gogo.

The mashonisa, who refused to give his name, said he trusted the girl as her gogo was a loyal client.

“I heard the girl was lying, but I don’t care. I need my money from her guardians,” he said.

But the girl’s grandfather (65) said he wouldn’t pay the mashonisa, and the child would have to get the money.

Financial adviser Steven Monareng said the problem was complicated as the mashonisa wasn’t registered.

“The gogo will have to pay the money as the girl is under age. The mashonisa was wrong to lend money to a 12-year-old without consulting her guardians,” he said.
