IN THE darkest days of the 1960s, six MK soldiers fighting for freedom were mercilessly hanged by the apartheid government.
Then in 1998, their dignity was restored when their exhumed bodies were re-buried at the Emlotheni Memorial Park in New Brighton, Port Elizabeth. But now it appears their memory is being disrespected – by teenagers who poke on their graves!
Political leaders and elders have expressed their anger after hearing that the memorial site has turned into a dating site where horny youths are seen bonking each other.
This memorial park was built by Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality in 1998.
Residents said the things that go on in the park disgusted them and that today’s youth had no respect for Mzansi’s fallen heroes.
Former professional boxer Vukile Blouw (62) of New Brighton kasi told Daily Sun: “This situation is terrible and makes me angry. Relatives of these six MK soldiers would not be happy to see what is happening here.
“During the day the kids play there. Then at night young men bring their lovers to the site.
“I have been guarding this park and chased away many young people and they know me.
“This park is also a graveyard. People are not allowed to walk over graves,” he said.
A woman (57) said: “We once saw young people having sex there and pelted them with stones.
“Other times kids play on the graves and their parents see nothing wrong with it!”
ANC representative in the municipality Litho Suka said: “We condemn this behaviour in the strongest terms. Parents should also look after their kids and teach them to respect our history and heritage and stop vandalising our heritage sites.”
