UNLIKE most people, Sabelo Sithole is not afraid of bees.
The 14-year-old from Cyferskuil Village in Hammanskraal, Tshwane wants to be a beekeeper when he grows up!
Sabelo has already learned a few things from his brothers about the honey making insects. He said he knew he had to be brave to make his dream come true and whenever he saw a swarm of bees, he would approach them.
The SunTeam caught up with him and his friends at Tloonane Village after seeing them digging a hole around a beehive.
“The first time I came close to a hive was two years ago while I was walking home from the shop. I wasn’t strong enough to face them back then but I have since learned not to fear them,” said Sabelo.
“This is because my two brothers have told me all about different types of bees and their behaviour. Today, I am considering following a career in beekeeping because there are hives everywhere in our area.”
Although the boy in the past had been able to get fresh, sweet honey he could not reach the hive while the SunTeam was watching, as the bees started attacking him and his friends.
They were forced to go home empty-handed as they didn’t have the necessary skills or safety clothes like boots and gloves.
Sabelo’s friend Thabang Seanego (14) said: “I know how sweet honey is but I’ve never been as close to bees as I was today. I was the first to run away when they attacked us.”
