IN MAY, Belekazi’s baby died a brutal death, allegedly at the hands of an uncle who saw the child as a tokoloshe.
Now the man has died a violent death in a head-on car crash.
AND THE ONLY TEARS THAT BELEKAZI WILL CRY ARE TEARS OF JOY.
“I asked God to avenge my baby’s death and He has answered my prayers,” said Belekazi Sowazi (33) from Khayelitsha, Uitenhage, in the Eastern Cape. “I screamed with happiness. I won’t attend his funeral. I will be celebrating it by drinking champagne,” she said after hearing of his death on Sunday afternoon.
When Belekazi’s mother, Nomfundo Sowazi (58) heard her daughter celebrating she thought Belekazi was getting married.
“I heard a woman ululating and singing ‘ha la la, ha la la’ and I thought there was going to be a wedding,” said Nomfundo.
“But it was my daughter and her friends. They told me my brother was dead.”
She said she didn’t confront them.
“Instead, I joined them in their celebration.”
“God has miracles. He has punished the killer.”
Nomfundo said she suffered a light stroke when her grandson died.
“My brother had many grandchildren but he never mistook one of them for a tokoloshe,” she said.
Belekazi’s 10-month baby boy, Azakhanye, was killed by the uncle, who claimed he mistook the baby for a tokoloshe after a traditional ceremony.
The story was published in Daily Sun on 5 May.
When Daily Sun visited the dead child’s family, the elders called a young man to speak to the SunTeam.
But the man was angry and tried to push the SunTeam around.
“You can write whatever that other family has told you.
“Get out. I won’t give you my name!” he said.
The elders tried to calm him down but he did not want to listen.
Sergeant Majola Nkohli said: “Two vehicles were involved in a head-on collision on Rocklands Road.
“A man (61) died in the accident. A case of reckless and negligent driving was opened.”
The dead man was supposed to appear in court next month for the death of Azukhanye.
“The investigating officer will obtain a death certificate in order for the court to withdraw the case of murder,” he said.
