FACING violent thugs has become as much a part of Baahiil Ismali’s working life as stocking the shelves.
The 27-year-old man and his brother own a spaza in Kliptown, Soweto.
They are constantly targeted by criminals, having been attacked and robbed twice already this year.
Two weeks ago, Baahiil was attacked in his shop by six armed thugs.
This time the thugs left without hurting him.
But on Tuesday, the thugs returned with a vengeance.
Baahiil said: “We had just opened the shop when a man came in to buy 20 litres of paraffin.
“I had just finished filling up his container when three other men suddenly burst into the shop armed with guns.”
He said the thugs shouted at him and his brother to lie on the floor.
“We did what they told us to do but they still moered us, hitting me on the head with guns. I was left bleeding as they fled on foot,” he said.
Besides the 20 litres of paraffin, the suspects allegedly stole R6 000 cash, cigarettes and groceries. Baahiil’s injuries were treated at a clinic.
Now the brothers are living in fear. “I don’t feel safe anymore. People pretend to be customers but come here to rob us,” he said.
Kliptown police spokeswoman Constable Thuli Ngwenya said business robbery and assault cases were opened. No one has been arrested and police are investigating.
